Motion pictures are fully protected by copyright. Public exhibition, especially when an admission fee is charged, could have violated copyright.
The copyright doctrine of fair use, however, permits certain uses of brief excerpts from a copy righted material for not for profit teaching purposes without permission. If you have specific questions about whether your plans to use of film clips or other copy righted materials in your lessons are permissible under these guidelines, you should consult your churches legal counsel. In the USA churches can apply for a blanket licensing agreement from the motion picture licensing Corporation at http://www.mplc.com for about 100 dollars per year. This blanket licensing agreement is not yet available in the UK.
